Visitors to New York City quickly find out that the nickname “The City that Never Sleeps” is well earned.

There’s no shortage of magnificent architecture, breathtaking views, and much history, not to mention people – at any hour of the day. Indeed, the city is home to 8.5 million people and covers 305 square miles (490.8 square kilometers).

Manhattan is the city’s most densely populated borough and is the city’s historical birthplace. It’s also the borough most closely identified with the city, although the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens have much to offer visitors as well.

Here’s a look at five types of activities that visitors and New Yorkers alike can take partake in.

1.)       Broadway and Off-Broadway Shows

The Great White Way has something for everyone, with 35 plays and musicals currently open, and dozens of off-Broadway shows as well.

Make sure to see the current revival of “Fiddler on the Roof“ that brings Sholom Aleichem’s stories of Tevye the milkman and his daughters back to the stage.  This one is in Yiddish, the language that would have been spoken in the fictional town of Anatevka, with English supertitles.  But you know the songs anyway.

In addition, our critics’ current favorites include “Beetlejuice,” “Book of Mormon,” “Hadestown,” “The Inheritance,” “Jagged Little Pill,” and “Moulin Rouge.”
